The "number plate" section is part of the driving information section on UK Traffic News.
The current number plate system was introduced in the UK on 1 September 2001 and will operate until 28 February 2051.
It started with "51" number plates like in 2001 and will end in 2051 with "00" number plates like

The first two letters on number plates stand for the region the vehicle was first registered in see the link for "What the letters stand for on UK number plates".
The last three letters are random letters for specifically identifying the individual vehicle and its registered keeper.
A new system will then need to be introduced from 2052.
What do the number stand for on number plates? Under the current number plate system in the UK the numbers increase by 1 each year in March and September. For a table of the year numbers for number plates. So from 1 September 2013 to 28 February 2014 new number plates are "63" and look something like...
and from 1 September 2014 it will be "64" and so on each September increasing by 1.
So from 1 March 2014 to 31 August 2014 will be "14" and look like...
From March 2015 they will be "15" and increase each March by 1.
From September 2014 will be AA64 for example and so on increasing by 1 each year until February 2052 which will be "00".
